Case Study
Client: Elly, Female, early 20’s
Primary concern: Post-concussion syndrome. 4 concussions over last 6 years – most recent approx. 1 ½ months ago.
Symptoms: Daily headache, dizziness, affected vision
Primary doctor recommendations: Rest and wait for head to heal itself. Pain meds when needed
Other concerns: Since her last incident she has had to stop her exercise like running and weight training, is unable to drive herself for any distance, and has had to take a break from college due to the excessive headaches. She was trying to keep up with her homework but found it difficult due to headaches and blurred vision.
Treatment One: Bowen/NST (a safe, holistic approach that helps put the body in position to heal itself) treatment.
- Initial symptoms – headache, tight neck, dizziness, blurred vision
- Assessment – showed primary problem in neck and jaw
- 35-45 minute treatment including some back and lower body moves. Primary work on neck and jaw
- Body responded well. No headache after treatment. Neck looser.
- Recommended second visit in one week
Elly came in for her first treatment a little bit skeptical…“I wasn’t sure I would see any changes to the headaches I had been experiencing ever since my most recent concussion. After one treatment I started noticing changes to the way I was feeling. It was truly a turning point in my recovery.”
Treatment Two – one week later: Bowen/NST treatment
Feedback from 1st session: symptoms were not as bad overall – even when doing homework. Headaches were less (she was a little surprised because she had gone on a road trip over the weekend and had gotten less sleep than normal).
- Initial symptoms – slight headache, vision off
- Assessment – showed primary problem in neck and jaw
- 35-45 minute treatment including some back and lower body moves. Primary work on neck and jaw
- Body responded well. No headache after treatment. Neck looser. Vision improved
- Recommended third visit in one week
Treatment Three – one week later: Bowen/NST treatment
Feedback from 2nd session: all symptoms were significantly less – doing a lot of homework.
- Initial symptoms – no headache, some tension in neck
- Assessment – showed primary problem in neck and jaw, improved since last week
- 35-45 minute treatment including some back and lower body moves. Primary work on neck and jaw
- Body responded well. Neck looser. Vision improved
- Recommended visit when available or as needed – client moving away for college.
“[Three Mondays] and three treatments later, I am now almost back to full functioning!”
“I would recommend Bowen treatments to those dealing with on-going headaches associated with post-concussion syndrome or even migraines, because it has made all the difference for me!” ~ Elly
A concussion is the least serious type of traumatic brain injury that alters the way the brain functions. It is caused by a sudden direct blow or bump to the head.
That blow to the head can impact the brain, but can also affect the neck and jaw, and even the rest of the spine.
Symptoms will most likely continue until these other areas are corrected.
Long term symptoms like headaches, blurred vision, dizziness, fatigue and difficulty concentrating or confusion, can lead to other problems and disrupt your life in many ways.
After seeing your doctor to determine the extent of injury caused by your concussion, Bowen/NST treatments can help improve your recovery, so don’t deal with these lasting symptoms any longer.
Results vary. This treatment is not intended as a cure for concussions or any other health condition. The body has the ability to heal itself, and Bowen/NST has been proven to assist in this process.
